Experimenting with islands

By on October 16, 2013

We’ve had some problems with the small size of our islands, namely that items constantly falls off the islands. Previously all islands fit into one chunk (when we had large chunks). That was the limiting factor then. Now we have smaller chunks, where they belong to a logical island. This enables us to make larger islands, which we’re now experimenting with.

There will be caves and stuff happening inside the islands too. Maybe we’ll throw in a volcano or two for good measure!

I’m testing some new island generating algorithms. The idea is to have bigger islands with more to do on each island. This looks promising.

The limiting factor now is framerate when there are many chunks with mesh in the scene. And currently the view distance is shorter than the actual size of the island, which in turn makes the buddies fall off.

Making a game sure keeps you busy!
